According to the International Organization for Migration, as many as 400,000 undocumented migrants cross from Central America into southern Mexico each year. The majority of these individuals are fleeing Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala—three of the five most dangerous countries in the world. Yet what they face when they cross into Mexico is often just as treacherous as what they are fleeing—rampant violence, corrupt officials, detainment, imprisonment, and even death.
It is estimated that tens of thousands of migrants go missing each year once they have crossed the Guatemala-Mexico border.
